Amid the advancing frontiers of educational technology, ChatGPT has emerged as a promising tool for fostering self-regulated learning.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in assisting high school L2 learners with self-regulated learning in English vocabulary and in enhancing their learning motivation. The participants are four high school students with comparable intermediate English proficiency levels, who were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group to learn English vocabulary autonomously, without and with AI-assisted tools, respectively, over 3 months. Data were collected from four sources: pre/post-tests, weekly vocabulary tests (measuring depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge, as well as receptive and productive capabilities), a survey on learning motivation, and in-depth interviews.

The contributions of the study are twofold: it will provide insights into the practical benefits of ChatGPT for enhancing self-regulated learning strategies in L2 vocabulary acquisition, and it will clarify the motivational dynamics associated with the integration of AI tools in language learning.
