Impact of ChatGPT on L2 Writing and L2 Writers: Learning and Affective Dimensions
ETRA-Wenshan International Conference, November, 2024
This study explores the impact of ChatGPT on both the learning outcomes and affective dimensions of L2 writing. Over a 36-week period, 14 high proficiency L2 writers engage with ChatGPT to assist their English academic writing.
Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study collects a variety of data, including semi-structured interviews, reflective journals, surveys on perception of learning outcomes as well as affective reflections, and comparative analyses of initial writing drafts versus final revisions. Through data triangulation, this study aim to understand the influence of ChatGPT on L2 writers learning and the writers’ affective responses elicited by such interactions, including agency and self-efficacy. By closely monitoring progress and collecting self-reported data, the research intends to provide an empirical foundation for understanding the capacities and limitations of AI in facilitating advanced L2 writing skills.
